What AI Is Still Bad At

AI excels at remixing existing ideas. Ask for a marketing strategy and you’ll get a competent synthesis of established approaches. Genuine strategic insight—the kind that identifies a non-obvious path—remains rare in AI output. When it appears, it’s usually because the AI connected dots that were already available rather than generating something truly new.

Long-Form Coherence

Quality degrades with length. A 500-word blog post can be solid throughout. A 5000-word report will have sections that don’t quite fit, themes that appear and disappear, a structure that drifts from the stated outline.

For long-form work, AI is better as a collaborator on sections than as a generator of complete documents.

Knowing What It Doesn’t Know

Confidence doesn’t indicate accuracy. The AI sounds just as certain when it’s right, when it’s wrong, and when the question has no clear answer.

This is the limitation with the worst consequences. An AI that said “I’m not sure about this” when it wasn’t sure would be dramatically more useful. Current models don’t do this reliably.

Tasks Where Human-Only Is Faster

The editing required to make AI output match your taste often exceeds the effort of creating from scratch.

Anything With More Setup Than Execution

This includes many quick edits, simple lookups, and straightforward formatting tasks. The prompt is the bottleneck, not the execution.

AI costs more than subscription fees. These costs are rarely discussed.

Moving between your work and the AI tool has cognitive cost. You’re holding your task in mind, switching to the AI interface, crafting a prompt, evaluating output, switching back to your work.

For deep work, this switching adds up. Sometimes it’s worth it. Sometimes the switching cost exceeds the benefit of AI assistance.

Editing Mediocre Output

AI output often looks good enough at first glance but requires significant editing to actually use. Reading mediocre text, deciding what to change, making the changes—this is work, and it’s work you wouldn’t do if you’d written from scratch.

The question isn’t whether AI saves time on first drafts. It’s whether the total time (prompt + generate + edit) is less than writing yourself.

AI makes mediocre output easy. When mediocre is easy, it’s tempting to ship mediocre.

  • Brainstorming when you need options, not decisions
  • Format transformation (restructuring, reformatting, translating registers)

These are real productivity gains. They’re not magic, but they’re real.

Overhyped Today

  • Research from memory—still hallucinates sources
  • Long-form coherence—still drifts
  • Strategic advice—still generic
  • Replacing human judgment—still can’t
  • Autonomous agents—still brittle

The gap between demos and reliable production use remains wide in these areas.

Watch for Next

  • Better uncertainty communication—models that know what they don’t know
  • Longer reliable context—coherence over documents, not just paragraphs
  • Multimodal reasoning—genuine understanding of images and documents, not just pattern matching
  • Verifiable claims—citations that are actually checked

Progress in these areas would change what’s possible. For now, plan around current limitations.

Using Limitations as Strategy

If everyone has access to the same AI tools, AI output becomes table stakes. The differentiation is elsewhere.

Where AI Struggles = Where Humans Differentiate

Original thinking. Genuine expertise. Relationships. Taste. Judgment. These are harder to replicate and more valuable because AI can’t provide them.

If AI can do it, everyone can do it, and it’s not a competitive advantage. Your advantage is in what AI can’t do.

Building Workflows That Play to AI Strengths

Don’t ask AI to do what it’s bad at. Use AI for drafting, summarizing, brainstorming, formatting—the mechanical parts of creative work. Use your time for judgment, strategy, and the parts that require human perspective.

This is different from using AI for everything. It’s using AI strategically.

Knowing When to Close the Chat and Just Write

Sometimes the best use of AI is not using it.

When you know what you want to say, say it. When the task is quick, do it. When the AI keeps getting it wrong, stop trying to fix the prompt and write it yourself.

AI is a tool. Tools are useful when they’re the right tool for the job. Hammers are great, but not for screws.


Honest assessment of limitations isn’t pessimism. It’s the foundation of effective use.
