VOLATILE FREE ROSTER
Current read on Kilo: it is worth watching, but it is not the cleanest foundation for a “stable free stack” page.
Current Status
Kilo’s official pricing page now makes the core positioning clearer: Kilo Code itself is free and open source, while AI usage is billed separately through pay-as-you-go credits, Kilo Pass, BYOK, local models, or whatever live free models happen to be available.
That is useful, but it comes with an obvious catch: the free roster changes fast.
Best way to think about Kilo:
- a strong opportunistic extra
- not the single source of truth for your whole free stack
- useful when a free model you want is active right now
What You Get
Why people still check Kilo
| What Kilo gives you | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Fast-changing free-model roster | Can be very good when the right model is live |
| BYOK support | Useful if you already have API keys |
| Big model catalog | Good for comparison and opportunistic usage |
| IDE fit | Better workflow fit than generic chat tools |
Pricing & Credits
Kilo mixes pay-as-you-go usage, bonus-credit promos, BYOK, and occasional free-model lanes. That makes it flexible, but also harder to explain cleanly than OpenCode or NVIDIA NIM.
The Setup
- Install Kilo Code in VS Code or use its current CLI path.
- Check the current free-model list before committing to it as your main tool.
- Use it when the active free roster matches your needs.
- Fall back to OpenCode or NVIDIA NIM when you need clearer, easier-to-explain defaults.
The Catch
The catch: free availability and exact model economics move around enough that Kilo should be treated as a living opportunity, not a fixed entitlement.
