Claude Max App vs Web Prices: Check Before You Subscribe

Paying for Claude Max through your phone? Check the web price before your next renewal. Anthropic lists Max 5x at $100/month and Max 20x at $200/month for web subscriptions, and explicitly says mobile prices can differ. Source: Anthropic’s Max guide.

The practical opportunity: the US Max 20x listing is $249.99 in Apple’s store versus $200 on the web. In the Thai example below, a $107 tax-inclusive web quote converts to about ฿3,566, versus an app offer of about ฿4,994. Your saving depends on your final checkout and payment fees.

The price difference is real

Public prices checked September 21, 2026:

The US listed-price gap is $24.99/month for Max 5x and $49.99/month for Max 20x—about 20% of the listed mobile price, before differences in tax or payment fees. Twelve unchanged monthly payments would differ by $299.88 or $599.88. Those are projections of the listing gap, not verified annual savings.

The Reddit discussion that prompted this check reports roughly $50 extra for Max 20x in the iPhone app. The current listings support a $49.99 gap. The thread is customer testimony, not a receipt audit; its automated summary does not establish why the difference exists.

Web is not always cheaper. The US Apple listing and advertised web price both show Pro monthly at $20. Compare your exact tier and interval, including any store credit or payment benefit you would lose.

Thailand: $107 on the web versus ฿4,993.75 in the app

Two owner-supplied screenshots, reviewed September 21, 2026, make the comparison concrete:

• Official Android app offer: Max 5x at ฿4,993.75 per month; Max 20x at ฿9,987.50. The owner confirms the app capture date as September 21. This offer differs slightly from the Thai Apple listing above.
• Claude.ai web checkout: Thailand selected, Max 5x monthly at $100, $7 tax, $107 due today, renewing at $100/month plus tax. This is a checkout quote, not a payment receipt.

View the original app offer. Its displayed monthly amount is ฿4,993.75 (about ฿4,994); it has no separate tax breakdown. The app’s final payable total and store billing-region settings were not independently checked.

The owner supplied a currency-converter quote of $107 = ฿3,565.56, dated September 20, 2026 at 18:21 UTC (September 21 at 01:21 in Thailand). The converter/provider was not supplied, so treat this as an illustrative reference rate, not an independently verified historical rate or the rate your card will use.

That is about 29% less, not 50% off. If the app offer is its final total, and the converted web charge incurred an illustrative 3% card fee, web would cost ฿3,672.53: still ฿1,321.22 less, or 26.5%. That fee is a sensitivity example, not a claim about any bank. We have no settled charge or completed switch proving realized savings. The screenshot’s “Save 50%” badge belongs to the Max 20x tier option; it does not describe this web-versus-app comparison.

Why the base-price comparison is nearly 50%

At the owner-supplied reference of ฿33.323 per US dollar, ฿4,993.75 is about $149.86 and ฿9,987.50 about $299.72. Both are 49.9% above the advertised $100/$200 web base prices. This is a different comparison from the tax-inclusive checkout above.

These annualized base-price gaps assume unchanged prices and exchange rates. They exclude web tax and card fees and are not promised savings. For the observed 5x web quote, the illustrative ฿1,428.19 monthly difference would instead total ฿17,138.28 across twelve unchanged payments, before card fees. We did not observe a final Max 20x web checkout.

Pro does not show the same gap

Using the same reference rate, $20 converts to ฿666.46. Thai Apple Pro at ฿699 is only 4.9% above that base-price conversion; Thai Apple Max 5x at ฿4,990 is 49.7% above its ฿3,332.30 reference. US Apple Max is about 25% above the USD web base. The Thai Android and iOS Max offers are almost identical, but the size of the gap differs by plan and market.

This comparison cannot identify the pricing formula. It does show why one universal “app stores add X%” explanation is inadequate. The German euro listings are included as local prices; without a matched German web checkout and exchange-rate basis, they do not establish a comparable premium.

Check your bill

1. Find who bills you. Check your latest receipt and subscription settings: Anthropic, Apple, or Google. Record the full renewal price and date, not just a prorated upgrade charge.
2. Match the product. Compare Pro with Pro, Max 5x with Max 5x, and Max 20x with Max 20x, over the same period. Separate temporary offers from ordinary renewal prices.
3. Inspect the web offer. Sign in to Claude using your existing account and check Settings → Billing or the upgrade screen. If it redirects you to your app store or hides a quote, ask support before cancelling just to reveal a price.
4. Compare final totals. Include tax, your card’s exchange rate, and foreign-currency fees. Keep your real billing details. A USD sticker price is not the amount your bank will necessarily charge.
5. Keep the cheaper suitable route. If the difference is zero or negative, there is no saving from switching. If it is positive, record it and check the renewal instructions below.

A markup and a saving use different denominators. Moving from $150 to $100 saves 33.3% of the old bill, even though $150 is 50% above $100.

Already subscribed?

Cancel renewal through the platform that currently bills you. Anthropic says cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period; paid access continues until then. It advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Official cancellation instructions.

A June 30 Reddit report describes overlapping web and iOS charges. This is an unverified customer report, not evidence of how often it happens.

Cancelling renewal does not transfer billing to Anthropic. Record the confirmed expiry. To avoid overlap, wait until the existing paid period ends and verify its status before buying a replacement through the same Claude account, unless support gives you a specific migration procedure. Recheck the replacement price then: today’s quote does not lock a future price. Do not assume cancellation transfers credit, refunds unused time, or preserves an old offer.

Why prices differ—and what this check covers

Several factors can contribute: taxes, store commissions, localized price points and publisher choices. The public documents do not explain the full Thai Max difference.

• Tax: Thailand’s Revenue Department lists 7% VAT. More directly, this web checkout shows $7 tax on $100. That observed tax alone cannot explain an app offer roughly 49.9% above the converted base price.
• Store economics: Google lists 15% for automatically renewing subscriptions in its remaining-markets schedule; regional fee changes and exceptions apply. Apple’s standard subscription terms give developers 70% in the first paid year and 85% afterward, minus applicable taxes; exceptions apply. A commission is not a government tax or a fixed retail surcharge.
• Localized pricing: Apple lets developers choose subscription price points by territory, with suggested equivalents accounting for tax and FX. Local prices need not track spot exchange rates. This documents the mechanism available, not Anthropic’s actual choices.

Even a simplified calculation that preserves $100 after a 15% commission and then adds 7% tax gives $100 ÷ 0.85 × 1.07 = $125.88, not $149.86. That is arithmetic, not a reconstruction of anyone’s invoice. We cannot attribute the remaining difference to a particular company, fee or intention.

Compare legitimate billing channels using accurate billing details and all applicable taxes. This guide does not recommend changing your country, misrepresenting your address, or avoiding tax. Anthropic says your billing address determines tax calculation.

Buying through the web does not mean using Claude only in a browser: Anthropic’s plan comparison includes chat on web, iOS, Android and desktop. A headline 5x/20x multiplier does not tell you the final price or guarantee the same multiplier across every usage limit. This billing comparison makes no claim about legality.

Useful follow-up questions are who selects these regional Max price points; why the relative gap differs between Pro, Max and countries; whether entitlements match across billing channels; and whether an official migration procedure preserves unused value. No reply or completed migration is on file. Prices were checked on September 21, 2026; this is a dated comparison, not continuous monitoring.
