Use access you already have first. Our October subscription picks are Claude Pro $20/month for Sonnet 5.5 and bounded Opus 5.5 work, or ChatGPT Pro $100/month when sustained Work/Codex use or useful, verified dots research/planning access solves a constraint. Confirm dots access if that is your reason to upgrade. For metered work, shortlist DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and MiMo V2.6 Pro; GPT-6 Luna suits repeatable tasks and Sol 6.1 harder work. Don’t upgrade yet if your current route finishes the job.
Choose your next spend
| Workload | Recommendation | Monthly cost / extra spend¹ | Limit; switch when | Evidence / checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Occasional work; current allowance fits | Don’t upgrade yet | $0 extra | Existing caps; reconsider only for blocked useful work | Editorial / Oct 3 |
| Writing, research, review, bounded coding | Claude Pro; Sonnet 5.5, Opus for harder work | $20/month new seat | Five-hour and weekly caps; Max only if the right meter improves | Author + vendor / Oct 3 |
| Sustained Claude sessions | Max 5x | $100 total; +$80 over Pro | Separate weekly cap remains; compare actual blocked work | Editorial + vendor / Oct 3 |
| Sustained Work/Codex use or useful dots access | ChatGPT Pro 100; Sol 6.1 | $100 total; +$80 over Plus | Work/Codex share usage; buy only with verified useful dots access or capacity need | Author + vendor / Oct 3 |
| Custom automation or batch work | Metered APIs | USD per 1M tokens; tools separately | Provider rate/context limits; switch when failed work or review erases savings | Editorial + vendor / Oct 3 |
| Mixed work, $200+ total budget | Both providers + addon reserve | Depends on seats held | Each seat needs a job; drop idle subscriptions | Editorial / Oct 3 |
| Urgent delivery; latency is costly | Pro 500 | $500 total; +$400 over Pro 100 | Ultrafast burns allowance faster; stop if useful throughput doesn’t justify it | Editorial + vendor / Oct 3 |
¹Monthly USD list prices and differences before tax/fees, assuming the named prior tier is replaced without overlapping subscriptions; check checkout and prorating. A new seat costs its full price. Recommendations are editorial judgments informed by the author’s October 3 preferences and linked vendor terms. No paid comparison was run: cost per accepted result (CAR)—the spend attributable to work that passes your acceptance checks—is not-run.
What changed since September
- Sol 6.1 is a separate option; Sol 6 scores remain older evidence.
- Dots and Pro 500 have published terms; Pro 200 reopened with a lower allowance and a dated grandfathering transition.
- Sonnet 5.5 joins Opus 5.5 in the Claude decision; the $20/$100 choices depend on workload and meters.
1. Use access you already have
Try a real task on your current seat. Sonnet 5.5 is our routine Claude pick; Opus 5.5 is the candidate for difficult debugging, synthesis and consequential review. Anthropic’s overview lists current identities; the Opus review covers dated independent evidence. Sonnet 5 results do not evaluate Sonnet 5.5.
Already on ChatGPT Plus? Try GPT-6.1 Sol in Work/Codex before Pro; OpenAI lists both tiers, subject to rollout/settings. Sol is our substantial coding/document-work candidate; Luna suits extraction and defined edits. OpenAI’s near-Astra capability description is a vendor claim, not our measured result.
Try dots for a research decision or plan review if already eligible. Personal Pro access rolls out gradually to users over 18 outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland. Dot conversations don’t consume ChatGPT limits; Work/Codex tasks still consume their limits, and deeper work has a separate allowance. The access guide explains the details. This is not unlimited Astra execution.
2. Buy a modest subscription for a specific constraint
Claude Pro $20 is worth reconsidering for routine Sonnet 5.5 and bounded Opus work. Choose Max 5x $100 when useful work repeatedly hits the session limit and the weekly allowance still fits. Pro and Max terms establish plans, not finished-task counts.
ChatGPT Pro 100 at $100/month is our preferred OpenAI upgrade for sustained Work/Codex use or useful, confirmed dots access. Use Sol 6.1 for coding and Luna for simpler jobs. Occasional Sol use can fit Plus; a launch demo alone doesn’t justify $100/month.
For a tighter coding budget, consider OpenCode Go at $10/month if its clients and windows fit. September retains the September 27 detailed allowance check; the OpenCode guide covers setup. Current terms require identified coding-agent traffic and apply five-hour, weekly and monthly windows. Allowance is not direct API cash; additional Zen balance spending requires opt-in.
Reassess $200 plans before renewal
Pro 200 reopened with lower allowance at the same $200 price; eligible subscribers retain the former allowance through October 29. Historical “20x” or claimed “25x” labels don’t establish current task capacity. We have not measured whether model efficiency offsets that reduction.
Claude’s 20x means session capacity versus Pro, with five-hour resets and a separate weekly cap. It never established 20× overall compute. Read the Max correction. The former Claude Code 50% weekly promotion ended; its replacement is 25% above the pre-promotion baseline, not on top. Promotion record.
At $200 before tax/fees, ChatGPT Pro 100 + Claude Pro 20 leaves an $80 addon ceiling. At $250, two $100 seats leave $50. We prefer both providers when each has a recurring job; reserve funds for metered models via OpenRouter or specialist speech/video tools. Verify route charges, tool support and data handling separately.
Pro 500 at $500/month fits a high-value deadline only if latency is the bottleneck. Astra Ultrafast consumes allowance faster; token speed is not task speed or guaranteed delivery. Check speed/consumption terms against the full bill.
3. Buy metered capacity when control pays off
Our lower-cost shortlist starts with DeepSeek V4.1 Flash for coding/research and MiMo V2.6 Pro for harder agent work. MiMo V2.6 Pro’s price and access differ from MiMo V2.6 Flash; don’t transfer MiMo V2.6 Flash’s open-weight evidence. MiMo V2.6 Flash remains a cheaper simpler-task candidate.
Luna suits repeatable OpenAI-toolchain work; Sol 6.1 is the step up for multi-file coding and judgment. Its token rates are higher than Luna’s. Use current pricing and the Sol 6.1 card for rates, cache charges and long-context conditions. The Sol/Luna pricing guide retains dated predecessor evidence; Sol 6 scores do not evaluate 6.1.
Metered use earns its place through automation, route control or measured economics. Count cache writes/reads, output/reasoning, tools, retries and checking. Don’t assume dashboard budgets are hard cutoffs. The playbook explains the calculation; the capacity and offer guides detail reset mechanics.
A cost worksheet before you upgrade
Copy this for one renewal month. Use existing invoices and accepted work; leave missing figures blank.
| Record for one stated month | Current route | Proposed route |
|---|---|---|
| Full recurring seat bill, including tax/fees | ___ | ___ |
| Metered API, overflow and specialist-tool spend | ___ | ___ |
| Accepted tasks / attempts | ___ / ___ | ___ / ___ |
| Review and cleanup minutes | ___ | ___ |
| Meter that actually blocked useful work; reset time | ___ | ___ |
| Feature or deadline the change would solve | ___ | ___ |
Cash = seats + addons + fees. Report review minutes separately unless you agree an hourly value. For workflow comparisons, declare seat allocation and divide attributable spend by accepted results; zero accepted results means undefined cost per result. Renewal compares the full future bill.
Example: $120 in seats + $30 addons = $150/month; an $80 addon ceiling makes the budget $200. This is arithmetic, not observed savings. Proposed acceptance/review remains not measured.
Don’t upgrade yet if you cannot name the blocked work or another seat would sit idle. A later comparison needs five real tasks with acceptance rules first: evaluation method. A tiny pilot cannot prove a universal winner. Return to the monthly audit before renewal.
Common buying questions
Do I need $100 Pro for Sol 6.1?
No. Plus is listed too; Pro needs a separate capacity or feature reason. Availability depends on rollout and settings.
Does buying both providers double useful capacity?
Not automatically. Their allowances aren’t interchangeable. Buy both only when each solves recurring work; track idle spend.
Is subscription allowance API credit?
No. Included allowance, purchased product credits, resets and API dollars are separate. Check which meter a reset refills and its clock; don’t build recurring value around a temporary grant.
